Asociación Medioambiental Pelagic Life Canarias Europa

This grant to the Asociación Medioambiental Pelagic Life Canarias Europa is one we are particularly proud of as it was generated from the first commercial b2c product we launched back in 2021: Ocean Beer. To prove that our consumption choices matter, we set out to show that even a beer is not a beer, each brand choice supports a different future. From the first day we honoured the grant-giving process and donated 100% of the profits as if Ocean Beer was an ongoing concern, and after nearly four years we were so proud that Ocean Beer turned its first profit in its own right. So as of December 2024, Ocean Beer directly donates 100% of its profits to ocean protection and restoration.

The grant was made possible thanks to our incredible and committed partners Paco Fernandez, Alejandro Paez, Borja Suaza Sanz and the rest of the Canarian Hospitality team for being the dedicated anchor client to make this happen; Gino de Reuwe, founder of Cerveceria Isla Verde for being our trusted licensee in the Canaries; Thibault Mesqui for flipping the model to a profit-making licensing one; our Science & Impact Advisory Board member Max Bello for his ever generous guidance; and last but not least, Francis Pérez.

Francis founded the Tenerife-based, not-for-profit Pelagic Life Canarias Association with objective to disseminate knowledge for the protection of the marine environment of the Canary Islands. It has a particular focus on cetaceans and their marine habitats, as well as other pelagic life. Specifically, this grant will support the work that has been ongoing for a few years to create an urgently needed large Marine Protected Area.
