WHY ANTARTICA
A global commons. A global responsibility.
The Southern Ocean connects the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans, regulating heat and carbon for the entire planet. The Antarctic Circumpolar Current — the strongest on Earth — could lose 20% of its strength by 2050 if current warming trajectories continue.
Krill are the foundation of all life in the Southern Ocean — and industrial supertrawlers are extracting them at unprecedented rates, for pet food, fish feed, and krill oil supplements. Remove the krill, and the entire food web collapses.
At the same time, CCAMLR — the body mandated to protect Antarctic marine life — has failed to establish a single new Marine Protected Area in eight years. In 2024, it moved backwards: removing the spatial limits that had dispersed krill fishing away from critical wildlife feeding grounds.

Krill: The Species the Whole Southern Ocean Depends On
Antarctic krill contribute between 70% and 96% of the calories consumed by penguins, whales, seals, and seabirds. They also sequester ~23 megatonnes of carbon annually near the Peninsula alone — carbon retained in the deep ocean for over 100 years. Some projections estimate krill biomass could decline by 50% to near-extinction by 2100 under business-as-usual warming.

The campaign demands CCAMLR reform, closure of the Southern Ocean to krill fishing, establishment of the Antarctic Peninsula MPA, and protection of at least 30% of Antarctica’s high-value waters under the 30×30 target.
